The Research Experience: Planning, Conducting and Reporting Research by Ann Devlin gives students a complete and applied resource to guide them through the research process. Students learn best by doing, so by presenting the information in the order needed to conduct their first formal research project, students will absorb and apply the material more easily to their research project. Starting from the idea that one of the major hurdles in conducting sound research is avoiding biases, the book begins with an examination of biases and faulty assumptions, which is reiterated throughout the book. The most common types of research are emphasized, including correlational, quasi-experimental, and experimental, with additional sections on between and within subjects, pre-post, cross-sectional, and longitudinal designs, and a separate chapter on qualitative research. A special feature of the book is the inclusion of technologies that are increasingly available to students and faculty conducting survey research, such as Survey Monkey, Qualtrics, Amazon Mechanical Turk, and other new tools. The Research Experience includes a full chapter on writing and research dissemination, an increasingly important part of the curriculum and one which students can apply to future careers in research and beyond.
